How to Refurbish Your Kitchen Cabinets
No matter how diligent you are in maintaining your kitchen cabinets, the ravages of time and the natural effects of usage will make them look worn-out. Fortunately, you can make them look brand new again without having to empty your wallet.
First, clear out the contents and clean the insides of the cabinets. Then give your cabinets a thorough sanding to remove old paint and varnish. You can use sandpaper or an electric sanding tool to do the job. To make the task easier, remove the cabinet doors by unscrewing the hinges. After removing the paint or coating, you can clearly see breaks, cracks, and holes in the wood. Fill them up with putty then sand them until they are even and level with the wood surface. Do the same procedure to the kitchen cabinets. While you are at it, replace damaged hinges and handles with new ones. The interior sections of your cabinets do not usually incur as much damage as the outside. However, if these are damaged, apply the same procedure as you would to the exterior.
Once the cabinets are sanded smooth, it is time to paint them. Choose a colour that matches or complements your kitchen. Cover the areas you do not want to paint with masking tape. You can hand-paint your cabinets but if you are an inexperienced painter, you might leave annoying brush marks. To avoid these, consider using a spray gun or contract a specialist to do it for you. Do not worry about properly painting the insides unless the cabinet doors have glass panels, which renders the interior visible. Finally, reinstall the doors. Wait for the paint to dry completely before putting back the contents.
